Habib is a Creative Director at Microsoft Studios since 2010. He has over 12 years of experience in visual effects for film and 10 years in the games industry. Nominated for two Academy Awards and winner of two BAFTAs in Visual Effects for his work on Twister and The Perfect Storm while at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), some of his other film projects include 2 Star Trek films, Star Wars Episode I, The Bourne Identity,Spawn, and Signs.

Habib served as a Senior Art Director at Electronic Arts (EA) from 2002 – 2009 where he worked on Need for Speed Underground, 007 Bond Everything or Nothing, and Need for Speed Most Wanted which received a Visual Effects Society (VES) Award in 2006. His latest project is RYSE: Son of Rome, a launch title for the XBox One being released this November. Zargarpour is very passionate about using real time techniques in film making. His passion is combining his experience in film and games on transmedia projects and to cross-pollinate both industries with best practices of each. Habib is an active member of AMPAS, BAFTA, and a founding member of the Visual Effects Society and the 5D-Conference.

Christopher Evans

Art Technical Director

Crytek

Christopher Evans is the Art Technical Director at Crytek’s Frankfurt studio, where he is responsible for art and animation technology and pipeline. Chris’s passion for characters and rigging led him to the position of Lead Technical Artist on Crysis and later to Industrial Light + Magic, where he was a Creature Technical Director on multiple films including James Cameron’s Avatar. Rejoining Crytek, he focused on Crysis 2 while spearheading CINEBOX, a re-purposing of CRYENGINE for virtual film production. Chris is now working on the upcoming launch title Ryse.

Deconstructing Elysium: Image Engine takes Visual Effects into the Future

Set in the year 2154, Neill Blomkamp’s Elysium explores a future where two classes of people exist: the very wealthy, who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined planet. As lead visual effects studio, Vancouver-based Image Engine managed all of the visual effects for the film, from designing and creating the epic space-habitat, through to building the computer generated flying spacecraft and the droids who police both Earth and Elysium.

This presentation will focus on a key droid sequence and will discuss how multiple departments came together to create one of the film’s most dynamic scenes.

Visual Effects Producer for the production Shawn Walsh will lead a conversation with Associate Visual Effects Supervisor Andrew Chapman, Senior FX Artist Greg Massie and Lead Animator Earl Fast, to cover the creative and technical challenges and provide an in-depth breakdown of the visual effects.

A Tech Preview by Side Effects Software
Houdini Engine is a new piece of technology from Side Effects Software that allows for deep integration of Houdini technology into a wide variety of Digital Content Creation tools. Senior Product Specialist Rob Stauffer will explain how both film and game studios can load Houdini Digital Assets into their go to applications and build a more integrated procedural pipeline that does not rely on baked-out data. Patrick Tubach

Patrick Tubach was the Co-VFX Supervisor of Star Trek Into Darkness for Industrial Light and Magic. He has worked as a compositor, composite supervisor and Associate VFX Supervisor at ILM since 1999, and has contributed vfx to over 40 films, including Star Wars Epsiodes 2 and 3, Transformers, Mission Impossible III, and Super 8.

ABSTRACT

Since the pop-in augmented reality contact lenses described by Verner Vinge inRainbow’s End won’t be available for some time yet, NYU is working on emulating the future of augmented reality via virtual reality, by using a 6DOF tracked Oculus Rift as the VR display device. Users are able to see and touch physical objects (with a possibly modified visual size and shape), and can see their own hands and fingers rebuilt as synthetic objects, allowing a degree of flexibility in augmentation that is not possible through either video-see-through or optical-see-through A.R.

The advanced hand-tracking technologies that make this possible will be discussed in this upcoming presentation, as will the advanced study of hand movements for gesturing, typing, playing musical instruments, surgery and surgical simulation, and other fine motor tasks from both the industrial and artistic perspectives. We will also show new research on procedurally shareable documents, which combine the advantages of Google docs and shareable IDEs, and how they can help in authoring, and bringing to life, interactive procedurally animated characters.

ALEX McDOWELL

Associate Professor, Production, IMD, iMAP

USC School of Cinematic Arts

Alex McDowell is one of the most innovative and influential designers working in narrative media. With the impact of his ideas extending far beyond his background in cinema, he advocates an immersive design process that acknowledges the key role of world building in storytelling.

In his 30+ years as a narrative designer, McDowell has worked with directors Terry Gilliam, Tim Burton, David Fincher, Zack Snyder and Steven Spielberg, amongst many others.

From 1999-2001 Alex McDowell worked with Steven Spielberg to design and develop a world for the film Minority Report, prior to a completed script. The process that evolved changed the nature of film design from analogue to digital, and profoundly affected the nature of digital production, with a radical shift towards a non-linear workflow. Since then McDowell’s work has build on the dynamic relationship between creativity and emergent technologies.

McDowell recently designed Man Of Steel, Zack Snyder and Chris Nolan’s retelling of the Superman origin story, where he built the holistic world of Krypton, its history and its integration with Earth.

McDowell is associate professor in the Interactive Media, Production, and Media Arts and Practice (iMAP) divisions at the School of Cinematic Arts, USC, where he is creative director of the World Building Media Lab and the 5D Institute. As visiting artist at MIT’s Media Lab from 2006-2011 he designed the robot opera Death and the Powers for composer Tod Machover. He is a Getty Research Institute scholar, and a member of the AMPAS SciTech Council. In 2006, he was awarded Royal Designer for Industry by the UK’s Royal Society of Arts.

Alex McDowell is co-founder and creative director at 5D | Organization, a cellular and interdisciplinary transmedia design practice.
